Matter, Thread or Zigbee: What Should Australian Smart Home Buyers Choose?

Matter, Thread and Zigbee are not rival ecosystems. Here is what each one actually does, how they work together on Home Assistant and how to choose devices for an Australian home.

Matter, Thread or Zigbee: What Should Australian Smart Home Buyers Choose?

Matter, Thread and Zigbee are not really competitors for most Australian buyers. Zigbee is the mature protocol with the widest range of lights, sensors and plugs today. Thread is a newer low power network built for reliability. Matter is the shared language that lets devices from different brands talk to each other. The right mix depends on the devices you want and whether Home Assistant is running the system behind them.

What problem this question is actually about

Australian buyers usually ask this question after finding a device box marked "Matter compatible" or "Zigbee" or "Thread" and wanting to know which one to trust. The honest answer is that these three are not three competing ecosystems to choose between. Zigbee and Thread are wireless networks that devices use to talk to a hub. Matter is a compatibility standard that sits on top of a network, including Thread and lets a device work with more than one smart home platform.

Choosing wrong does not usually break a system outright. It can mean paying more for a device that does the same job, or ending up with a smaller pool of compatible products for a specific need such as a smart lock.

How Zigbee works

Zigbee is a mesh network protocol that has been used in smart lights, sensors and plugs for over a decade. Because it has been around the longest, it has the largest catalogue of affordable devices, from motion sensors to smart bulbs to door and window sensors. Zigbee devices talk to a Zigbee coordinator, commonly built into a Home Assistant hub and repeat signals to each other, so coverage improves as you add more mains powered devices.

The tradeoff is that Zigbee is its own separate network. It does not talk to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth devices directly and it needs a compatible hub or coordinator to bridge it into the rest of your smart home.

How Thread works

Thread is a newer, IP based low power mesh network. It behaves more like a small internal Wi-Fi network for battery devices and it was designed from the outset to support Matter. Thread devices are still relatively new to the Australian market, mostly certain locks, sensors and some lighting brands, but the number is growing quickly because most major manufacturers back it.

Thread needs a Thread border router, which is usually built into a hub such as Home Assistant with the right add on hardware, or into some smart speakers and hubs.

How Matter works

Matter is not a network. It is a shared application layer, a common language, that runs over Wi-Fi, Thread or Ethernet. A Matter certified device can be set up once and used with Home Assistant, Google Home, Apple Home or Amazon Alexa at the same time, rather than being locked to a single app. Matter does not replace Zigbee. Many Zigbee devices reach Matter through a compatible hub that translates between the two.

Which one should you actually choose

For most Australian homes the practical answer is not one protocol, it is a hub that speaks all three. Home Assistant supports Zigbee, Thread and Matter at the same time, so a system built on it does not force a choice. You can add an affordable Zigbee sensor, a Thread enabled lock and a Matter certified light to the same dashboard and automate them together.

If you are choosing a single new device today, a Matter certified product gives you the most flexibility if you might change platforms later. If you are buying several sensors on a budget, Zigbee usually still offers the widest choice per dollar. Thread is worth prioritising for devices where battery life and reliability matter most, such as door locks and leak sensors.

For renters and apartment owners specifically, all three protocols work through plug in or battery powered devices that need no rewiring, which matters more for what you can install than which protocol you pick.

What if you already own Zigbee or older devices

Most buyers are not starting from zero. If you already have Zigbee lights, sensors or plugs, none of that becomes obsolete. A Home Assistant hub keeps talking to your existing Zigbee coordinator while also supporting Thread and Matter devices you add later, so there is rarely a reason to replace working hardware just to "upgrade" to a newer protocol. The practical question is usually what to buy next, not what to throw out.

Older Wi-Fi only smart plugs and bulbs that predate Matter also keep working. Some manufacturers have added Matter support to existing devices through a firmware update, which can bring them into the same unified dashboard without buying anything new. Checking whether your current devices have a Matter update available is often the cheapest way to improve compatibility before adding new hardware.

Installation and safety

Setting up Zigbee, Thread or Matter devices that plug in or run on batteries does not involve electrical work and can usually be done safely without a licensed electrician. Devices that need to be wired into a switchboard, such as some hardwired smart switches or a dedicated circuit for a hub, must be installed by a licensed electrician under Australian and NSW regulations. Hausie identifies which parts of a job need an electrician during the initial home assessment and never presents hardwired work as a do it yourself task.

What it costs

Costs depend heavily on how many devices you are adding and which protocols they use, so treat the following as general guidance rather than a quote. A handful of Zigbee sensors and plugs added to an existing Home Assistant setup typically costs in the low hundreds of dollars including hardware. Adding Thread or Matter devices such as a smart lock or a video enabled sensor tends to sit at the higher end of that range per device, reflecting newer technology and features. A fuller multi protocol system with a proper hub, coordinator hardware and professional configuration costs more, mainly driven by device count and any electrical work required. Hausie provides a fixed quote after assessing your home, so there are no surprises once work begins.

Hausie's recommendation

Rather than picking a single winner, Hausie builds systems on Home Assistant specifically because it removes the need to choose. Zigbee, Thread and Matter devices all end up on one dashboard, automated together, with no dependency on a single manufacturer's app or cloud service. This local first approach means the system keeps working even if a device brand changes strategy or a Wi-Fi connection drops.

FAQ

Do I have to replace my existing Zigbee devices to use Matter? No. Matter and Zigbee can run side by side on a Home Assistant system, so existing Zigbee sensors and lights keep working alongside newer Matter certified devices.

Is Thread better than Zigbee? Neither is universally better. Thread suits battery powered devices that need strong reliability, while Zigbee often has a wider and more affordable device range for common uses like sensors and plugs.

Can I use Matter devices with Home Assistant? Yes. Home Assistant supports Matter alongside Zigbee and Thread, so a Matter certified device fits into the same system as your existing devices.

Do I need a subscription to use any of these protocols? No. Zigbee, Thread and Matter are open standards and do not require an ongoing subscription, although some device brands offer optional cloud features.

Will my choice affect the resale value of my home? A well documented, open standards based smart home system is generally easier for a new owner to keep using than a system locked to one closed app, since it does not rely on a single brand staying supported.
